Benicar Spruelike Enteropathy Injury Lawsuit

Benicar Spruelike Enteropathy Lawsuit

Blood pressure medication Benicar may cause gastrointestinal problems that include sprue-like enteropathy. Benicar did not carry warning labels for this condition until more than a decade after it was introduced.

On August 1, 2017, a $300 million Benicar settlement was reached with the drug makers to resolve certain claims for injuries stemming from use of Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor or Tribenzor prior to May 2015. However, there is only a limited amount of time for individuals who have not already filed a case to hire a lawyer!

NOTE: The Carlson Law Firm is no longer reviewing additional claims for injuries stemming from the use of Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor or Tribenzor. The content on this page is provided for informational purposes only.

FDA Warning

In July 2013, the FDA announced this drug (marketed as Benicar, Benicar HCT, Azor, Tribenzor, and in the generic form as olmesartan medoxomil) would receive a product label update to reflect the risk of spruelike enteropathy.

According to the FDA’s drug safety communication, this GI disorder can cause symptoms that include severe chronic diarrhea with substantial weight loss. The condition may take months or years to develop and may require hospitalization, the agency said.

The link between this drug and enteropathy was first uncovered in 2012. Researchers from the Mayo Clinic found that over a three-year period, 22 patients taking the medication displayed symptoms suggestive of celiac disease; however, blood tests for the patients did not support this diagnosis.

Benicar Litigation

More than 1,700 claims have been being filed against Daiichi Sankyo by people who have suffered sprue-like enteropathy and other gastrointestinal issues as a result of taking this drug.

Attorneys state that if doctors and patients had known the risks, they would have used an other blood pressure medication or would have been closely monitored for symptoms similar to celiac disease.

Injuries & Side Effects

A recent Mayo Clinic study has linked the development of spruelike enteropathy to the use of this medication. Spruelike enteropathy is a disease that produces severe gastrointestinal symptoms; such as chronic diarrhea, significant weight loss, nausea, and overall malnutrition.
