What is Depakote?

Depakote, the proprietary name given to the drug divalproex sodium, is a prescription drug that was developed to treat seizures for those suffering from epilepsy and episodes of mania for those with bipolar disorder. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat bi-polar disorder, epilepsy, and migraine headaches. While Depakote served as an effective treatment for some ailments and disorders, it has also been linked to serious side-effects that can cause lasting health problems.

Injuries Caused By Depakote

Recent controversies have shaken consumer confidence in this drug. Most notably, mothers who took Depakote during pregnancy have given birth to babies with severe birth defects. The FDA has released warnings regarding the link between Depakote and birth injuries.

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) published a study in June 2010 that found it increased the risk of the following six birth defects:

Cleft palate

Spina Bifida

Atrial Septal Defect (hole in heart)

Hypospadias (abnormal opening in a boy’s urethra)

The same study proved that the rate of spina bifida in children of mothers who took this drug was 12 times higher than the normal rate. The risk of hypospadias was five times higher and craniosynostosis was seven times as common.

Linked To Lower IQ Scores

In addition to the above side effects caused by the dangerous drug, the FDA released a safety alert in 2013 stating that Depakote and similar drugs, should not be given to pregnant woman to prevent migraine headaches because of a link between the drug and lower IQ scores in children born to woman who took the drug.
