A 16-year-old La Vernia High School student was killed when she was struck by a car while waiting for the school bus Friday morning, officials said.
Police identified Linda Vela as the victim of the pedestrian accident in La Vernia.
Vela was reportedly struck by the driver of a 2002 Crown Victoria. She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
As an active student within her high school, the death of Vela has provoked mourning among classmates and loved ones.
Vela was walking near the shoulder of FM 1346, in the eastbound lanes when she was struck by the Ford, officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety said. The driver of the Crown Victoria was identified as Gregory Rodriguez, a resident of St. Hedwig. Police said Hedwig remained at the scene of the pedestrian accident.
Pedestrian accidents that take place near or within school zones and around bus stops are a common problem in Texas, highlighting the need for extra care by drivers and pedestrians alike.
Having proper signage, signals and equipment near locations where children and students frequent often, is important to notifying drivers to take care. Additionally, during early morning hours when students are traveling to school and afternoon times as they travel home, it’s vital that drivers take ever more care, paying close attention, especially during adverse weather or dark morning hours.
