A pedestrian accident in San Antonio near Larkspur Elementary left a young girl dead and police searching for the suspect, who was driving the pickup truck involved in the wreck on Braesview Wednesday morning.

Officials identified the 9-year-old girl, who was killed in the pedestrian fatality, as Tatyana Babineaux, who was walking to school when she was struck, authorities said.

The driver of the Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck fled the scene of the San Antonio accident. Police are searching for witnesses and the driver.

The accident occurred near the elementary school, where high numbers of children are often walking to and from school.

Officials believe the vehicle involved probably endured damage as a result of the collision, which may help authorities locate the vehicle and the driver.

Pedestrian accidents near schools and bus stops can be devastating because of the lack of protection pedestrians, especially children, have in contrast with much larger vehicles. Despite lower speed requirements, failure to adhere to school zone speeds and inattention can make it difficult for drivers to react in time, especially when children may be difficult to see and morning hours are dim.

Mobile devices, GPS, radios and even passengers can be distracting, severely limiting a driver’s reaction time, limiting their ability to stop in time and even avoid a wreck or collision with walkers, joggers and cyclists.
