An Alice, Texas woman was transported to a hospital via helicopter when she was rear-ended by a distracted 18 wheeler truck driver, Corpus Christi officials said, Saturday.
The 58-year-old woman had to be cut out of the vehicle after the doors were jammed closed from the impact of the Texas 18 wheeler accident. The woman reported severe pelvic pain resulting from the big rig accident.
The crash occurred Saturday morning on Highway 281 near County Road 472. According to authorities on the scene, the truck driver became distracted when he looked to the side of his truck while boxed in by another 18-wheeler truck. The driver attempted to avoid rear-ending the smaller passenger vehicle by swerving but was not able to avoid the accident, police said. The truck was estimated to be traveling at speeds of 60 mph.
According to statistics, it takes almost 40% longer for an 18 wheeler truck to come to a stop as it does for a passenger vehicle to put on the brakes. Because of greater weight and awkward sizing, the operation of the over sized vehicle requires extra care and great attention to the roadways and passenger cars sharing interstates and highways.
Weighing in at as much as 80,000 pounds, which is the legal limit for trucks in most states, big rig accidents can be fatal when smaller passenger cars are involved. The size and weight difference of trucks in contrast with smaller cars on roadways often result in catastrophic impact anddeadly collision that leave passenger cars mangled with much smaller amounts of damage experienced by trailers.
