Auburn Student From Texas Dies in Single-Vehicle Rollover

A Sophomore from Auburn University, originally from Coppell, Texas, died from injures endured in a single vehicle rollover Sunday.
While trying to set a destination on a GPS system in the vehicle, 20-year-old Elizabeth Ainsworth, known to friends as “Libbie,” was killed when the driver lost control of the pickup truck and it rolled.
Ainsworth’s boyfriend, Drew Cole, a member of the Auburn football team, was the driver of the vehicle. He was injured in the accident but was released from the hospital soon after, officials said.
Authorities said the truck swerved and flipped over, causing Ainsworth to be ejected from the vehicle. She experienced serious brain injuries as a result of the truck rollover accident, police said.
Ainsworth was an active student at the University. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.
Ejection is one of the most common reasons for fatalities in single vehicle rollovers. But while it is sometimes assumed that fatal rollover accidents that involve ejection are always caused when occupants are not wearing a seatbelt, some tragic injuries and deaths occur when a seatbelt of piece of auto equipment fails.
The materials used for a seatbelt can be defective, causing the seatbelt to tear or rip, ejecting a passenger or driver. In addition, the buckle of a seatbelt can be faulty, sparking a belt to become unlatched during the impact of a serious accident.
