Balch Springs Woman Killed in I-20 Rollover Accident in Odessa

A rollover accident on I-20 in Odessaclaimed the life of a woman who lost control of her vehicle, then overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn, officials said.

Police identified the Balch Springs resident as 44-year-old Luz Cavazos, who was the sole occupant in the GMC Envoy SUV.

According to police reports, a white 18 wheeler truck was also involved in the accident, when the GMC clipped the back side of the big rig. Officials are still trying to locate the driver of the 18 wheeler truck driver, who left the scene of the rollover accident.

Cavazos was ejected from the SUV as it overturned, and police noted there was an abundance of broken glass at the scene of the car accident in Odessa. The vehicle overturned more than 12 times, officials believe.

A significant rollover accident, where the vehicle overturns multiple times can have horrific results but also require protection from auto equipment, designed to safeguard occupants from ejection. Laminate glass is one type of equipment that can be imperative in protecting drivers and passengers from ejection and even partial ejection.

In contrast with tempered glass, laminate glass contains a film that helps keep the piece of glass intact, protecting occupants from leaving the vehicle through the windshield or other window opening. While standards now require laminate glass for windshields, standards do not require it among other windows and sunroofs, making ejection and partial ejectionfrom those openings a dangerous possibility.
