A bicycle accident in Harlingen sent one rider to the hospital with injuries on Wednesday morning when he was struck by a vehicle while traveling near the intersection of East Tyler Avenue and 77 Sunshine Strip, officials said.

The name of the bicyclist injured in the accident has not yet been released but officials said he was transported to the hospital for injuries caused by the bicycle accident via ground ambulance.

The woman who was driving the vehicle that struck the bicyclist remained at the scene of the collision.

Bicycle accidents seem to be increasing across the state, especially in Central Texas, where bicycling is a very popular pastime. Like motorcycle accidents, bicycle crashes and the injuries resulting can be deadly, resulting in head injuries and other injuries to the body when a cyclist is struck by a much larger vehicle. In addition, bicyclists have much less protection while riding, making them more vulnerable to serious personal injuries.

Riding with traffic and following the same traffic rules as automobiles, cyclists are often struck from behind, catching them off guard and making it more difficult for them to react quickly enough or avoid the an auto collision with a bicycle.
