While some train accidents may be provoked by inattention to signals or rushing passersby attempting to beat a train, some situations may actually be provoked by inadequacies in the railroad equipment or lacking procedures completed by railroad employees.
The length of time signal arms are down, the sounding of a train’s horn prior to reaching a crossing and even the traffic signals governing an train intersection are all important factors that can make a railroad crossing a dangerous place for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.
