Drowsy Driver Kills One in Pedestrian Accident on Highway 100

A drowsy driver who fell asleep behind the wheel sparked a pedestrian accident on Highway 100 that left a Los Fresnos jogger dead on Sunday, police said.

Officials identified the man who was killed in the pedestrian accident as Eduardo Polanco, 25. Polanco was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead, emergency crew members said.

The driver of the 2007 Ford Mustang that struck Polanco was driven by Juan Carlos Garcia, 25, who is a resident of Mission.

Police said Garcia fell asleep while driving down highway 100 and lost control of the vehicle, crashing into Polanco as he jogged. Witnesses told police they followed Garcia when he attempted to leave the scene of the Highway 100 pedestrian accident. He later pulled over, they reported.

Authorities said that although they are still investigating the pedestrian accident, they do not believe alcohol was a factor. Garcia was, however, charged with manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones and family of Eduardo Polanco.
