A fatal San Antonio accident involving a car and a sport utility vehicle near U.S. 90 and 36th Street is being tied, by police officer, to alcohol.

According to officials, the driver of a Lexus rear-ended the SUV, knocking it out of control and sending it into a nearby guardrail. The SUV was tripped up by the guardrail, which caused it to rollover several times and land in an embankment.

The driver of the SUV was ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Police said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

The passenger in the SUV was transported to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses said the driver of the Lexus fled the accident scene but police later apprehended him, giving him a sobriety test, which he failed. The driver is facing charges of intoxication manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid. Authorities are contemplating intoxication assault charges as well.
