Jury awards $290,000 to injured man after crash

A Bexar County jury has awarded $290,000 in damages to a man injured in a motor-vehicle accident that left him seriously injured, and unable to work.

On August 27th, 2013, The Carlson Law Firm’s client, Elmoe Calvert, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Douglas Brown. Calvert was traveling west on an IH-35 frontage road, attempting to take the entrance ramp to N.E. Loop 410 in San Antonio. The defendant, Ricardo Tavares was headed east on the frontage road, towards Randolph Blvd. Tavares ran through a stop sign and crashed head-on into the vehicle Calvert was in.

Calvert sustained serious injuries to his left knee, and was left unable to work due to pain and suffering. He missed a total of 448 hours of work. Calvert underwent surgery to repair his knee injuries, however, even post-op, he continued to experience severe pain in his affected areas.

Texas Stop Sign Accident Attorneys

Stop signs and stop lights are designed to manage traffic and keep drivers safe. Most drivers adhere to the rules of stop lights and stop signs, but those who don’t can end up causing serious injuries and sometimes even fatalities. Almost everyone has run a stop light or a stop sign on accident before, but some drivers that are speeding excessively or driving recklessly speed up during a yellow light and end up causing a major accident. Most accidents where a driver speeds up to avoid stopping at a red light are severe and cause serious injuries to both parties involved.

There are nearly 70,000 accidents each year due to a person running a stop sign, and a third of those accidents result in injuries, often times serious injury and sometimes even death.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a total of 9,951 vehicles were involved in fatal crashes at stop lights between 1999 and 2000 – 20% of these vehicles failed to obey the signals and 13% failed to yield the right-of-way.

13,627 vehicles were involved in fatal crashes at stop signs – 21% failed to obey the sign and 23% failed to yield the right-of-way.
