Killeen ISD bus involved in head-on crash with SUV

A head-on crash occurred Thursday morning with a Killeen ISD bus and a Dodge Nitro SUV.

The crash happened around 7:45 a.m. when the bus was headed to Live Oak Ridge Middle School at Robinett Road and Thunder Creek Drive.

Six children were riding the bus, while one was taken to the hospital. Both drivers of the bus and SUV were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Nitro was swerving across the center line before the crash according to the bus driver.

The bus driver stopped, but the SUV still crashed into the bus.

The parents were notified to pick up the students.

Last year, data was gathered by The Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration on traffic accidents in the U.S. that involved buses and large trucks. This information has shed light on the truth about bus accidents.

With professionally trained drivers, security cameras and vehicle maintenance, one may think there would not be as many bus accidents on the road. Unfortunately, they are far more common than people think. While these pieces can help the safety of our students, we can’t control other vehicles on the road.
