Two people were killed when the vehicle they were in was struck in a Killeen train accident, early Friday morning, officials reported.

Police identified the driver of the vehicle as Fort Hood soldier Spc. Jeremy Wayne Berczik. 26. The identity of the female in the vehicle has not yet been released.

The two were traveling in a Dodge Charger when the vehicle was struck by a freight train. Police are investigating whether the two went around the railroad barricades of whether the train barricades malfunctioned.

Railroad equipment requires service and maintenance to ensure it operates properly, adequately notifying approaching vehicles when a train is come. But despite the necessary attention rail equipment requires, when a train malfunction occurs or crossing equipment is defective, serious injuries and even death can result in occupants in a vehicle that is struck by a train.

Because of the extensive time required for a train to come to a stop, the equipment used to notify motorists of an approaching train is vital to protecting both train occupants and drivers and passengers of vehicles.
