Lubbock Woman Killed in Single-Vehicle Rollover Crash

A Lubbock woman was killed in a rollover crash near Callahan County, Sunday afternoon, Department of Public Safety officials said.

Denise Gail Kopriva, 56, reportedly, rolled her Ford pickup truck when she lost control of the vehicle on FM 880, authorities noted. Kopriva is the former executive director of the Christian Women’s Job Corps in Lubbock.

Kopriva was pronounced dead at the scene of the Texas rollover accident. No other vehicles or passengers were involved in the tragic crash.

Police are still investigating the accident and what may have caused Kopriva to lose control of the pickup. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the rollover, DPS officials said.

Seatbelt use is often promoted as an important factor in keeping drivers and passengers safe should a collision or accident occur. But despite the importance of wearing a seatbelt, certain defects and faults can prevent the equipment from operating as it should.

Designed to restrain vehicle occupants, seatbelts can often prevent passengers and drivers from becoming ejected during a car accident, especially during instances of rollovers. Ejection during rollover accident is one of the leading causes of serious, debilitating injuries and fatalities that occur when a car, truck or SUV flips or becomes air born.

Some seatbelt defects that can prevent the safety equipment from protecting vehicle occupants include:

  • Defective seatbelt retractors, which create excessive slack, failing to restrain buckled occupants
  • Faulty latches, which can come undone during an accident, sometimes causing authorities to surmise occupants were not buckled up at all.
  • Unlatching caused by the force of an accident
  • Inadequate or defective stitching or belt materials that can tear during the force of restraint
