One man was killed in a San Antonio SUV tire blowout car accident on Loop 410 on Saturday afternoon when the tire failed, causing the driver to lose control of the Jeep the man was riding in.

Police identified the man, who was killed, as 23-year-old James Garcia.

Four other occupants were in the vehicle at the time of the tire blowout car accident in San Antonio. Officials said they did not experience life-threatening injuries and all four were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Authorities did not disclose which of the tires on the SUV blew out, causing the vehicle to overturn, settling on its roof.

The names of the other occupants in the vehicle were not released.

Tire blowouts often result in a loss of control by a driver, especially when the tire affected is the driver’s side, rear tire. It can be difficult for a driver to maintain control when a tire unexpectedly experiences a blowout and some drivers overcorrect in an attempt to maintain such control. At highway speeds, a tire blowout accident can be even more dangerous, involving other vehicles and catapulting a vehicle into a rollover car accident.

Tire blowouts and tread separation can occur for a variety of reasons. Tire defects and poor maintenance are sometimes amplified by rising temperatures and increased auto travel associated with summer.
