More than 1,200 Talcum Powder lawsuits pending
A motion has been filed with the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation in an effort to centralize all federally-filed ovarian cancer claims in a single court.
Court records show that at least 11 product liability claims involving talcum powder and ovarian cancer have already been filed in 10 federal jurisdictions.
The plaintiffs have suggested the Southern District of Illinois as the most appropriate venue for the proposed multidistrict litigation, according to court documents.
Along with the 1,200 state-level lawsuits pending, plaintiff’s claim a link between Johnson & Johnson baby powder and ovarian cancer. They allege that as early as the 1970s, studies have suggested that the regular and repeated use of talc-based powders for feminine hygiene purposes increased a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer.
They also say that Johnson & Johnson has been aware of this risk for years, but withheld the information and warnings from the public in an effort to insure profits continued..
Just this past April, a jury in St. Louis, Missouri, awarded $55 million in compensatory and punitive damages to an ovarian cancer victim who used Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based powders for nearly 40 years.
In February, another St. Louis jury ordered the world’s sixth-largest consumer health company to pay a total of $72 million to the family of a woman who died from ovarian cancer. The victim had been using Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower for more than 30 years.
Talcum Powder can be found in a variety of personal hygiene products including medicated powders, deodorant powders, foot powders, cosmetic powders and sanitary pads. It has been linked to a number of serious illnesses, like respiratory problems and ovarian cancer.
Women who have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer after long-term, regular use of talc-based products may be eligible to file their own talcum powder lawsuit.
