An Interstate 20 accident, sparked by a tire blowout on a GMC Envoy, traveling outside of Toyah, resulted in the death of a mother and the serious injury of her daughter last week.
Forty-two-year-old Laura Patricia Corral was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Pecos Justice of the Peace, Jim Riley. Her daughter, Laura Itzel Corral, 12, was transported to Medical Center Hospital. She was recently listed in stable condition.
Both accident victims were wearing seatbelts at the time of the rollover accident in Texas.
Texas Department of Public Safety officials said the tire blew out, causing the mother to lose control of the SUV. The SUV rolled through the nearby median and into the opposite traveling traffic.
Tire blowouts can be particularly dangerous equipment malfunctions, especially on a rollover prone SUV, causing drivers to lose control of a vehicle.
Tire blowouts that occur on the rear tires of a vehicle can be especially troubling, particularly when vehicles are traveling at highway speeds.
Some of the factors that can cause such rollover accidents and single-vehicle crashes include; tread separation, belt separation and tire blowouts. Bad tire design, poor quality materials, aged tires and inadequate manufacturing can all be the cause of a defective tire that can, ultimately, create serious risks on the road for drivers and passengers alike. The risk of rollover is often higher for SUV’s than for smaller passenger vehicles and sedans, highlighting the importance of quality tires on sport utility vehicles and trucks with higher propensity for rolling over.
