Navasota School Bus Crash Injures Students, Parents
At least 30 students and adults were hospitalized earlier this week due to injuries sustained in a crash involving two school buses and a work utility truck.
Three Navasota ISD school buses loaded with fifth-grade students from John C. Webb Elementary were traveling to Houston along U.S. 290 when one of the busses was rear-ended by a utility truck. The impact of the crash pushed the bus into a second bus.
First responders arrived at the scene and helped unload the students and parents after the crash. According to the Houston Fire Department, students and adults were transported to North Cypress Medical Center and CY-FAIR Hospital in stable conditions.
According to a social media post from the district, the students were on their way to a field trip.
The utility truck that is said to have to caused the crash is owned by CenterPoint Energy, a natural gas and electric service company in Houston.
Thankfully Navasota ISD reported all of the students and staff that were hospitalized have since been released with minor bumps and bruises.
However, this is not always the case. School bus accidents have the potential of being quite dangerous, especially when another large vehicle is also involved.
From 2006 to 2015 there were 1,313 people of all ages killed in school transportation-related crashes according to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That is an average of 131 fatalities per year. This data includes occupants of the other vehicles involved in the collision.
Injuries associated with school bus collisions
The small size of a child and their continued development are risk factors to consider if they were to suffer injuries from a school bus collision. Injuries to children can have a severe and even permanent impact on their growth and overall long-term health. During a collision, a child’s body may be thrown against the seat, or an object may strike them inflicting injuries such as lacerations, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, disfigurement, soft tissue injuries and more. These incidents are devastating for the students, drivers, parents, and communities involved.
Why do school bus crashes occur?
Just like the majority of other types of wrecks, school bus collisions are preventable. Millions of parents put their trust in school bus drivers to transport their children to and from school five days a week. Unfortunately, those same bus drivers are at times negligent while driving. Other times these crashes are the result of another parties negligence. Common causes of school bus crashes include:
- Poor maintenance
- Other driver’s failure to follow the rules (stopping when boarding and loading)
- Road conditions
- Distracted driving
- Driver fatigue
- Improper training of drivers
Understanding your legal rights
It is inexcusable when a child is injured due to the negligence of another. If your child was injured or killed while riding, boarding or exiting a school bus, you have the legal right to hold the at-fault party liable for the damages. It is critical that you seek the legal guidance of a skilled school bus accident attorney to ensure your child receives medical treatment, thoroughly investigate the school bus collision to determine who should be held liable and pursue fair compensation. School bus collisions tend to be complex because there may be multiple parties involved. Also, school buses are usually operated through government agencies and local school districts making the process extra complicated.
An experienced lawyer who obtains the necessary tools will help you recover for your child’s medical bills (past and future), pain and suffering, diminished quality of life, cost of rehabilitation and more. Without the guidance of a seasoned attorney, insurance companies will see the green light to try and get you to agree to a cheap settlement.
