An 18 wheeler struck a Nixon man Sunday morning on Highway 80, claiming the life of the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities identified the pedestrian who was killed as 54-year-old Nixon resident, Benito Araujo Gonzales.

Police said the driver of the 18 wheeler truck told officials that he was aware he had struck something but didn’t know what it was until later. The truck’s driver did remain at the scene, reports noted.

The truck, which is owned by J and K Leasing, out of Buffalo, Texas, apparently drug the victim of the truck-pedestrian accident several feet after he was struck.

Police are still investigating what may have caused the truck-pedestrian accident in Nixon and who may be at fault.

Although the aforementioned news highlights a tragic accident that police are continuing to look into, there are several ways that pedestrians and drivers, alike, can safeguard themselves from the hardship of horrific pedestrian accidents. Pedestrians inhabiting roadways during dark evening and morning hours should take special care to wear clothing that is bright and noticeable, especially if walking during those hours is completely necessary. In addition, it can also be helpful to wear reflective gear and stay away from areas that receive particularly high levels of traffic.

Motor vehicles should also make sure to pay extra attention, looking for pedestrian traffic that may be in the vicinity, especially near intersections, sidewalks and crosswalks.
