An SUV rollover accident in Odessa, Texas resulted in the death of one woman and the hospitalization of a man Sunday morning.
According to police, 44-year-old Nadine Pinson Espinoza was ejected from a 1992 Chevrolet Blazer when it rolled over after the driver lost control around 4:45 a.m. near the intersection of East Murphy and Standard.
The other vehicle occupant, 41-year-old Jay Hundstad was also ejected from the SUV in Texas. He was transported to Medical Center Hospital where he remains in critical condition. The vehicle was registered in the state of Nebraska.
Ejection is a common cause of rollover related fatalities and injuries. While the ejection of drivers and passengers involved in rollover crashes is sometimes caused by the lack of seatbelt use, sometimes, passengers and drivers can be ejected from a car, truck, or SUV because of defective or inadequate safety equipment.
Faulty seatbelts can prevent the safety equipment from protecting occupants from ejection during a rollover accident, while the type of glass used on the windows in a vehicle keep passengers and drivers from remaining within an automobile. Despite the use of laminated glass for windshields, in an effort to safeguard drivers and passengers during accidents, more cost effective tempered glass is often used for other windows on a vehicle.
In contrast with the extra layer of protection provided by laminated glass, many auto manufacturers highlight the importance of slight cost savings in contrast with protecting consumers with elevated safety equipment.
