Overpass collapse kills 12-year-old outside Houston
A partial highway overpass collapse in Sealy crushed a car, killing a 12-year-old girl and injuring her mother.
According to police, a Texas Disposal Systems truck hit the Highway 90 overpass on the southbound side of Highway 36 around 10 a.m., causing a large piece of concrete to fall on top of the vehicle traveling under the overpass in the other direction.
Bre’in Bullock, 12, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was sitting in the front of the car.
The mother, Leah Bullock, 35, was transported via Life Flight to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in critical condition, but her injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Another child was inside the vehicle at the time of Thursday’s incident, but wasn’t injured.
Police say that the disposal truck’s driver, 72-year-old Carl Weige, has just dropped off a dumpster, and the boom that holds the dumpster was still raised. Police noted that the truck did hit the warning device that hangs over the roadway to alert drivers that they may hit the bridge, but he didn’t stop.
An Austin County judge has confirmed that this particular bridge has been struck before, on a regular basis. The state has it scheduled to be replaced in 2017, with the bidding process about to begin.
