A pedestrian accident in San Angelo sent an elderly man to the hospital with injuries after he was struck by an SUV at the intersection of Sherwood Way and A&M Avenue, officials said.

Police identified the man as 74-year-old Charles Herbert Jacobsen. Officials have not yet released an update on Jacobsen’s condition.

According to authorities, the driver of the SUV was attempting to turn right at the intersection where Jacobsen was walking. Police said Jacobsen was walking home from a nearby HEB Supermarket.

The driver of the Nissan Xterra SUV, identified as 28-year-old Preston Martin, told officials he did not see Jacobsen crossing the road at the time of the pedestrian accident.

Authorities believe that Jacobsen had a pedestrian signal indicating he could cross at the intersection at the time of the accident injury in San Angelo.

Pedestrian accidents can often result in serious injuries and death because of the extreme vulnerability of walkers and joggers who have very little to protect them from the impact. Using crosswalk signals and following safe procedures that can allow pedestrians to see vehicles more clearly can sometimes help but does not always safeguard pedestrians from harm. Instead, it’s vital that drivers pay close attention to the roadways, especially where pedestrian and cyclists frequent often.
