A rollover accident on US 59 claimed the life of an Alvin, Texas resident and injured another occupant in the single vehicle accident, officials reported.

Police identified the driver of the Jeep that rolled as 67-year-old Juan Pasillas. Pasillas was pronounced dead at the scene of the US 59 rollover crash.

The passenger in the vehicle who was injured in the wreck was identified as 62-year-old Consuelo Pacheco Depasillas. He was transported to the hospital with what police described as non-life threatening injuries caused by the auto accident.

Officials on the scene said both occupants in the Jeep SUV were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.

In the instance of a rollover crash, vehicles are designed to protect occupants from serious injuries resulting from the serious blows a roof and other portions of a vehicle crashing into the ground or other surface.

Reinforced with pillars, the roof of a vehicle is designed with the technology and quality materials necessary to safeguard he precious space between an occupant’s head and neck and the roof of the vehicle. Defective roof pillars or those that do not adequately provide that protection may actually fail to keep occupants safe as a car, truck or SUV rolls.

In addition, other safety equipment, specifically designed to offer protection during a crash, can actually pose serious risks to drivers and passengers when they malfunction or contain serious flaws. Bad air bags and defective seatbelts can result in auto ejection and may even cause injuries in and of themselves.
