Rollover Accident Sparks Fire, Teenage Girl Killed

A teenage girl was killed in a rollover accident car wreck, when she lost control of the pickup truck she was driving and the Ford truck caught fire on Sunday, officials said.

Police identified the young girl who was killed as 17-year-old Shayla Bennett, who was driving the 2001 Ford pickup truck at the time of the Central Texas car accident.

The accident occurred on FM Road 80 and Freestone County Road 937 on Sunday evening.

According to police, Bennett may have lost control of the pickup truck, then overcorrected, causing it to overturn. It erupted in flames and Bennett was pronounced dead at the scene of the Central Texas car accident.

The pickup truck Bennett was driving may have been the same year and model as the Ford truck that may have experienced an electrical malfunction, sparking an Austin house fire that killed two young boys on July 10, 2012.

The Ford F150 may have been among vehicles recalled by the manufacturer for flaws in the cruise control switch that can result in overheating beneath the hood of the truck, even if the vehicles is not on and running. That particular recall was announced in 2005, according to a story published by the Austin Statesman.

Even during serious accidents, such as a rollover crash, vehicles are designed to protect occupants. Instead, some defects may result in instances that escalate a crash, such as a fire that can kill occupants that may have otherwise survived such a crash.
