Samsung recalls 2.8M washing machines

Samsung is recalling 2.8 million of their  top-loading washing machines after reports of 730 units exploded, resulting in nine injuries.

The top of the washing machines can unexpectedly detach from the chassis during use, posing a risk of injury from impact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. According to Samsung, the majority of the explosions happened when consumers were using a high-speed spin cycle for washing bedding, water-resistant or bulk items.

Injuries reported to the South Korean tech company include a broken jaw, and injured shoulder and other fall-related injuries.

The recall involves 34 models of top-load washing machines made between March 2011 and November 2016 and costing $450-$1,500.

For a complete list of models under voluntary recall, visit the CPSC website.

If you own one of the recalled models, you can contact Samsung immediately to receive one of the following remedy options:

  1. A free in-home repair that includes reinforcement of the washer’s top and a free one-year extension of the manufacturer’s warranty
  2. A rebate to be applied towards the purchase of a new Samsung or other brand washing machine, along with free installation of the new unit and removal of old unit
  3. A full refund for consumers who purchased their washing machine within the past 30 days of the recall announcement.
