San Angelo Woman Dies in Tread Separation Rollover Accident Outside Sonora, Texas

A single vehicle accident that resulted when the rear tire of a vehicle experienced tread separation left a San Angelo woman dead and her passenger seriously injured Sunday afternoon, police said.

Officials identified the woman who was killed in the tread separation accident as 77-year-old Marie Elena Sosa. Sosa was pronounced dead at the scene of the single vehicle accident outside Sonora, Texas, police said.

Sosa’s passenger, identified by authorities as Maria Gonzales of Wasilla, Alaska, was transported to Lilly Hudspeth Memorial Hospital in Sonora, with injuries resulting from the car accident.

According to reports, the rear, passenger side tire experienced tread separation, sparking the single vehicle accident. Although Sosa attempted to control the vehicle, she overcorrected and the car rolled. Police said she was not wearing a seatbelt.

Tire recalls are often the target of important recalls that result from poor design, manufacturing flaws and other dangers that can cause serious injuries should the product fail. But despite regulation, product requirements and recalls, tires that are not recalled when the problems are discovered or those products with serious flaws that slip through the cracks can pose serious danger for drivers and passengers.

Tread separation, especially when it occurs on rear tires, can cause rollover accidents, loss of control and serious collisions with other vehicles.
