An SUV rollover accident in San Antonio left two dead and another two injured Sunday afternoon, San Antonio Police said.

According to officials, a Sedan driving nearby veered off the road before overcorrecting and smashing into the side of a GMC Yukon, causing the SUV to lose control and roll over.

Relatives identified the driver of the GMC SUV as 34-year-old Jose Ramirez of McQueeny. The backseat passenger in Ramirez’s vehicle was also killed when the SUV rolled over, identified as 51-year-old Juan Flores Garcia.

Ramirez and Garcia were both ejected from the vehicle along with a 13-year-old passenger. Police said all three were not wearing a seatbelt. A fourth passenger was wearing a seatbelt and was not ejected from the vehicle, according to reports.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family members and friends of those injured and lost in this tragic accident.

Ejection, in addition to head injuries, brain injuries and spine injuries caused by vehicle roof crush, is one of the most common causes of injuries and death in SUV rollover accidents in Texas. Although the use of seatbelts is vital to protecting drivers and occupants, in some cases seatbelts and other safety equipment can malfunction, failing to protect drivers and passengers.

In addition to defective seatbelts, faulty glass can also sometimes provoke partial ejection, failing to keep occupants and their limbs within a vehicle during rollover accidents. Though some accident injuries can be prevented with the correct use of safety equipment, more stringent requirements and greater attention to details by manufacturers and regulations can also help safegaurd drivers and their passengers.
