School zone safety tips for motorists
It’s official. The kids are back in school, and along with the return to classes, comes the dreaded school zone congestion. Big yellow buses are rushing to meet their schedules, kids on bicycles are trying to make it class on time and harried parents are trying to make it to work on time.
It is important that as motorists, we remain vigilant when passing through school zones. It is an all too common occurrence that as personal injury attorneys, we hear about children who suffer injuries that could have been avoided had motorists been more careful.
Below are a few tips to keep in mind in order to ensure everyone’s school zone safety:
When entering a school zone, be sure to slow down and obey all traffic laws
Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. A pedestrian struck by a vehicle traveling at 25 mph is almost two-thirds less likely to be killed compared to being struck by a vehicle travelling just 10 mph more.
Avoid using a cell phone, unless it is completely hands-free, while driving in a school zone
According to researchers, taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of being in an accident. Children are quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars.
Watch for bicycles, skateboards, etc.
Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist.
Expect surprises and delays to avoid rushing
As a new school year begins allow yourself more time to get where you are going until you can figure out the effects of increased traffic. Rushing causes speeding. Although this is common, it often leads to accidents or traffic violations. So even if you are running late in the morning, drive carefully and cautiously. Safety is most important!
