Serious head injuries from baby strollers on the rise
An average of 17,187 children are treated in emergency departments for stroller or carrier-related injuries annually – that’s roughly 2 children every hour, according to a study released by the Academic Pediatric Association.
Data collected from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System showed that an estimated 360,937 children under the age of 5 were injured between 1990 – 2010. The database is operated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and tracks injuries related to sports, recreation and consumer products that have been treated in emergency rooms across the country.
The majority of children injured suffered brain injuries, and that number is on the rise. The proportion of brain injuries tripled from roughly 17% in 1990 to 53% in 2010.
However, this does not mean that strollers and baby carriers are becoming more dangerous, but rather that doctors and other health care providers are now more aware of traumatic brain injuries and concussions, said Kristin J. Roberts, the study’s co-author. Roberts is a research associated at the Center for Injury Research and Police at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.
Data collected shows that children who are under 1 year old are most likely to be injured, and that most injuries occurred when the child fell from a stroller or carrier, or they were tipped over.
Parents are advised to also ensure that children are properly buckled into their strollers or carriers, and to keep stroller handles clear of all bags and purses, because these objects could cause tipping.
