Single Vehicle Car Accident Near Conroe Kills 16-Year-Old, Injures Driver

A single vehicle car accident in Montgomery County killed a 16-year-old passenger and left the driver of the vehicle in critical condition after he lost control, smashing into a utility poles off FM 1485, officials said.

Police identified the young girl as Halie Diane McDonald, 16, of Conroe. The driver of the 2002 Saturn Ion was identified as Daniel Lee Fruend, 18, also a resident of Conroe.

The impact of the accident damaged both utility poles, including the power lines above them, Department of Public Safety authorities said.

Officials reported that emergency crew members struggled with freeing the two young people from the vehicle following the Conroe, Montgomery County car accident.

McDonald was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston with internal injuries, broken bones and head trauma, authorities said. She was pronounced dead the next day. Both poccupants were transported to the hospital via ground ambulance after foggy conditions made it difficult for a helicopter to reach them at the scene of the Conroe car accident.

Freund was transported the Ben Taub Hospital for the treatment of his injuries.

Police think speed may have been a factor in the car accident in Montgomery County but are still investigating the crash.
