A Hiawatha, Iowa man was killed in an early morning rollover accident, last Friday, when he lost control of his vehicle, officials believe.

According to authorities, 40-year-old Jonas Gallardo-Parra, was driving eastbound near Gilbertville when his vehicle drifted onto the road’s shoulder, causing him to overcorrect and lose control. The vehicle rolled several times before coming to a stop.

Emergency representatives believe the impact of the rolling vehicle caused the head injuries that, ultimately, killed Gallardo-Parra. He was transported to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, where he was pronounced dead.

There were no other vehicles or passengers involved in the tragic rollover accident, police said.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this traffic, fatal accident in Iowa.

Rollover accidents, especially among SUV’s can be deadly in and of themselves. The impact of a rolling vehicle can cause severe injuries, including: head injury, brain injury, spinal injury, neck injury and back injury. While the impact of the roof of a vehicle hitting the ground during the instance of an Iowa rollover accident can be deadly, vehicles should be designed to protect the fragile neck, head and back of the occupants within a vehicle.

The pillars of the roof should be designed to protect the space where a passenger or driver’s head is within the vehicle, even during a rollover accident. Inadequate protection can arise from a variety of auto defects committed by manufacturers.

In addition to designing and manufacturing a vehicle that has strong roof pillars that protect the head space of a car’s occupant, the glass used by a manufacturer can also affect the injuries or fatalities resulting from a rollover accident. In fact, the glass used on windows, windshields and even moon roofs can prevent passengers and drivers from being ejected or partially ejected during a rollover accident.
