An SUV collision with a motorized scooter, left a man dead and the driver of the SUV charges related to the accident and the fatality, Houston Police Department representatives said.

The 56-year-old man on the scooter was holding his one-year-old son at the time of the accident, but held on so tight that, police said, the child only sustained minor injuries.

The man riding the scooter was identified by officials as Clifford Johnson. He was thrown at least 20 feet upon impact, despite the SUV’s speed of approximately 35 miles per hour.

The driver of the SUV, 20-year-old Wilmer Farley III was charged with intoxication manslaughter after police gave him a field sobriety test. He was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital for blood samples.

Authorities on the scene said that Johnson left the walkway because of debris and sewer water that were in the pathway of the motorized scooter.
