Texas Tech Student Injured in Abiline Single Vehile Rollover Accident

An Abilene single-vehicle rollover accident left a 19-year-old Texas Tech student injured on I-20 near FM 603, Department of Public Safety officials reported.

Three other Texas Tech students were passengers in the vehicle but were uninjured in the rollover accident in Abilene. The driver of the SUV was transported to Henrick Medical Center.

According to reports, the driver was attempting to pass another vehicle, pulling into the right lane of traffic. After noticing another vehicle in the right lane, the driver overcorrected and lost control of the SUV, causing it to rollover.

SUV’s and truck in particular are vulnerable to rollover accident that can sometimes occur at no fault of the driver. Instead, the higher center of gravity and sometimes tall, boxy design, of SUV’s make the vehicles more prone to rolling over and causing serious injuries and even death as a result. The design of SUV’s and trucks, safety equipment and vehicle itself can leave drivers and passengers of these vehicles at a much higher risk of enduring a rollover and experiencing serious head injuries, neck injuries and spine injuries.

During a rollover accident, the roof and windshield are vulnerable aspects of the vehicle that can provide protection from ejection and roof crush, or provoke serious, life threatening injuries. As a vehicle rolls, the impact of the crash can cause the roof of a car to crush, smashing into the protective space of the vehicle that is meant to safeguard the head, neck, back and spinal cord of the passengers and driver.

Defective or inadequate roof pillars and faulty glass can impact the occupants of a car by failing to reinforce the roof of the vehicle. In addition to reinforcing the roof, the windshield and windows in a car, truck or SUV can also prevent passengers and drivers from being ejected from a car during a rollover accident.
