A teen on a Stratford, Texas high school golf team was killed in a golf cart accident, when he slipped from the cart, Monday, and fratured his skull.

The student was identified as 14-year-old Blaine Killian. Killian died at the hospital on Tuesday, from injuries caused by the Stratford golf cart accident.

According to officials from the school, the teen was in the golf cart after practice had already ended, at approximately 6 p.m. According to Stratford ISD Superintendent, Jerry Birdsong, the gold team does not use golf carts during practice.

While they may be small, golf carts can become very dangerous if the terrain where they are driven is not maintained or if drivers operate them in a negligent manner. While they may not move at high speeds, golf cart accidents can even be fatal, pinning riders beneath them or causing serious injury should they overturn or rollover.

In addition to being used on the golf course, some communities have even begun using golf carts as a mode of transportation, taking residents from one side of a community or area to another. While the drivers of golf carts and their attention to safety is imperative to protecting passengers and riders alike, the manufacturers of golf carts are also responsible for the safety of the products.

Some of the more common types of golf cart accidents include:

Collisions between golf carts and larger vehicles, like cars, trucks, etc.

Collisions between golf carts

Golf cart collisions with pedestrians

Tipping, overturning or rollover accidents that cause passengers to fall out or become pinned beneath the golf cart.
