A single-vehicle accident in Rusk County claimed the lives of three East Texas men, when their vehicle lost control, smashing into a tree. Despite wearing seatbelts, the young men were pronounced dead at the scene of the single-vehicle accident.

Blake Elliot Winfrey, 19, of Henderson was identified as the driver of the 2003 Ford Mustang. Nicholas Ramone Garza, 19, and his brother, Tomas Garza, 21, both from Selman City, were passengers in the vehicles. They were also pronounced dead at the scene of the Texas car accident.

Department of Public Safety officials said Winfrey may have lost control of the Mustang after overcorrecting the vehicle, causing him to crash into a nearby tree.

Car accidents are never something we expect to be involved in. But despite the lack of thought we may give to becoming involved in a serious traffic accident ourselves, vehicles manufacturers think about the possibility of accident every day as they manufacture a vehicle that is safe for occupants, drivers and other vehicle occupants sharing the roads.

Seatbelts, airbags, seat design and the materials comprising a vehicle are all often created to offer greater levels of protection, should occupants endure a car accident. But while manufacturers are required to put vehicles through vigorous testing, some standards that are not required may become less than priority.

Vehicle manufacturers are constantly collecting data about vehicles. But while some data may reveal new ways of keeping consumers safe, sometimes the protection of drivers and passengers comes second to the costs associated with improvements in safety.
