Three Injured in San Angelo Collision

An accident on North Bryant in San Angelo left three people injured Wednesday morning when the air bags in a sedan failed to deploy after the car was struck by an SUV.
According to police, Ely Dominique Del Rio, 21, was driving the SUV on 17th Street. Although Del Rio told police he had not yielded to the Buick Sedan he struck, the occupants endured injuries as the car’s air bags failed to deploy, reports said.
The SUV, driven by Del Rio, rolled after impacting the smaller sedan, authorities said, and came to a stop on its roof.
Bertha Sanchez Vidal, 47 and Michael Allen Chapoy, 37, had to be removed by San Angelo emergency crew members from the sedan.
Del Rio, Vidal and Chapoy were all transported to Shannon Medical Center with injuries resulting from the accident. Police cited Del Rio with failure to yield right of way, no seatbelt and no driver’s license.
Air bags have become a vital component of keeping passengers and drivers safe during unexpected accidents. But while consumers rely on transforming technologies in vehicle safety equipment to keep them and loved ones safe during rollovers, collisions and crashes, air bags that fail to deploy or deploy late can leave occupants serious injured or dead.
Manufacturers have a responsibility to properly design, create and manufacture proper safety equipment. Despite the lack of protection provided by faulty airbags, some airbags may even deploy when unnecessary, causing serious harm to auto passengers and drivers.
