Tread Seperation Accident Sparks Case Alleging Defective Auto Manufacturing

A California tread separation accident has brought recent influx of defective auto products to light, highlighting the importance of recall notification by auto manufacturers.
While traveling down I-5, Bill Brownwell’s 1993 Ford Ecoline E350, 15 passenger van lost control after the tread separated on his rear right tire. Losing control of the van, Brownwell could not avoid the rollover accident that followed, ejecting him from the van and killing his passenger, Tony Mauro.
Although the tread separation occurred years ago, the van’s passenger, Alexander Bessonov and 5 other plaintiffs are alleging that Ford Motor Co. knew about the defective tires and did nothing to notify dealers of consumers about the tread defects.
Despite the use of vans like the Ford Ecoline for group, organization and church transportation, the federal government has since banned the use of such vans for school use.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has warned consumers that only drivers specifically trained in operation should drive the vans because of the propensity to roll due to imbalanced design and heavy loads they often carry. Additionally, the government has issued warnings for owners of the van to pay close attention to tire inflation, inspecting wear and tread on a regular basis.
Some of the plaintiffs against Ford are also suing Sears, who sold the the defective tires, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., who manufactured the faulty product and Suburban Ford, who serviced the van, outfitting it with the poor quality equipment.
