Two Killed, Five Children Injured in I-10 Rollover Accident

Five children were transported to the hospital and two others were killed in a rollover accident on I-10 in Reeves County on Sunday, when the tire on their SUV blew out and caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Police identified the victims who were killed in the accident as El Paso resident, Nancy Aleman, 27, and Mesquite, New Mexico resident, Lareine McEdwards, 27. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene of the single vehicle rollover accident.

Officials said Gabriel and Jaylene Marez, 2, Jayden and Violet McEdwards, 4, and Haley Diaz, 7, were all transported to the hospital with injures stemming from the tragic rollover accident on I-10.

Police did not yet release whether the occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Although there are many factors tied to a rollover accident and the injuries and death resulting, some auto equipment can be related to a loss of control, including defective tires. Tire blowouts are a common cause of vehicle rollovers, especially blowouts that occur on the drivers-side, rear tire. A blowout on the rear tire, especially a blowout that occurs at highway speeds, can quickly cause a driver to lose control, which sometimes provokes overcorrection.

In addition, SUV’s have a specific risk for rolling because of their boxy designs and high center of gravity, making blowouts that occur on SUV’s an even riskier situation for auto occupants.
