Two Killed in Rollover Accident on Highway 54 in Hartley County

A single-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 54 left two people dead after the driver of the pickup truck lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn, authorities said.

Officials with the Texas Department of Public Safety identified the driver of the 1998 Ford truck as Fernando Chavez, 76. Chavez, reportedly, lost control of the truck and veered off the highway when he overcorrected in an attempt to get back onto US 54.

Chavez was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the car accident in Hartley County. He was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo, where officials said he was pronounced dead.

The passenger in Chavez’s vehicle, identified as Maria Villalba, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene of the Hartley County car accident. DPS officials said she was wearing a seatbelt.

After a tragic rollover accident, it can be tempting for victims and family members to wonder what could have been done differently, to prevent the hardship of such a serious crash. But while victims may wonder how they could have prevented the neck injuries, back injuries and head injuries, sometimes the vehicle itself may have failed to protect occupants from the crushing blows of a rollover impact.

The space between an occupants head and the roof of a vehicle is usually protected by the pillars of the roof and the roof cage, which is meant to prevent crushing should a rollover occur. Defective glass, poor design and inadequate testing sometimes create a situation where the vehicle fails to protect those within it.
