VIA Bus Accident in San Antonio Leaves 7 Injured

A bus accident in San Antonio left as many as seven people injured early Tuesday morning when the driver of a VIA bus ran a red light at the intersection of Southwest Military Drive and Pleasanton Road, officials said.

The San Antonio VIA bus accident, which occurred around 1 a.m., involved three passenger vehicles and at least ten people.

The driver of the bus, identified as George Campa, told officials he was tired at the time of the accident and was unable to react quickly enough when he realized the traffic signal was red.

One of the passenger vehicles involved smashed into the side of the bus. The bus then crashed into two other cars.

Although police do not believe the injuries incurred are life threatening, no update regarding the status of those hurt has been released.

Because of the sheer size of city buses and transportation, bus crashes in San Antonio can be serious and involve many people and victims. But despite the severity of bus collisions, most standards in place regarding training, bus maintenance, and procedures are designed to protect passengers and surrounding drivers from injuries and wrongful death. Without adherence to established standards, drivers, passengers and surrounding drivers are at risk of serious injuries caused by inattention, drowsy driving and operating a bus under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Some of the factors that are sometimes tied to accidents involving buses or public transportation include:

  • Inadequate driver hiring, back ground checks
  • Improper training
  • Poor bus maintenance
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Defective bus equipment
