VIDEO: Attorney Savannah Stroud on leaving an abusive relationship

The Carlson Law Firm attorney Savannah Stroud was recently featured on the popular television series MomsEveryday, which promotes on lifestyle and parenting tips to Moms across the nation. Stroud was featured in a short segment discussing the steps a woman should take if she finds herself in an abusive relationship.

The most important step? A plan of action, says Stroud.

“Put something into place before you actually leave. Set yourself up a bank account …put $10-$20, any money you come in to, in that account,” she suggests.

This is an important preparation, that not everyone thinks about.

Another good idea if you are wanting to leave an abusive relationship is to contact family members.

“A lot of times, you will have lost contact with family, but contact them anyways,” said Stroud.

It is not uncommon for a woman in an abusive relationship to loose contact with loved ones, whether it be due to embarrassment, or perhaps she isn’t permitted to by her abuser. Their support is going to be an important part of your case and recovery, therefore it’s a good idea to get in contact.

“And of course, contact a lawyer,” adds Stroud.

It is also very important that a woman who is being abused gets out of the situation as soon as she can.

“The longer you wait, the more likely it is that somebody is going to get arrested. There are going to be some CPS proceedings, and you could possibly lose your kids,” emphasized Stroud.

Savannah Stroud is a family law and criminal defense attorney who was named one top 40 National Trial Lawyers Under 40 in 2015. She was recently honored with the Jared Stenberg Attorney of the Year Award.
