Vitamins and Supplements Linked to Cardiovascular Disease and Cancer, Study Says

A new study of older women takingvitamin supplements on a daily basis shows that they may have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease and cancer as a result.

Although many consider a regular vitamin regimen to be healthy, the study highlights that long term use for those who do not have vitamin deficiencies could be dangerous.

Some of the specific vitamins and minerals that were shown to be particularly detrimental in the study, included:

  • Vitamin B6
  • Folic Acid
  • Iron
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Copper
  • Multivitamins

While the use of the aforementioned vitamins is linked with an increased risk of death, supplements containing calcium were actually tied to a decreased risk, according to the study.

More information must be gathered to truly understand the ramifications of vitamin and supplement use. Despite findings, some professionals within the health care industry still support the use of vitamins as part of a healthy lifestyle.

“I wouldn’t conclude from this that you stop taking a standard multivitamin. Few people eat the required amount of fruits and vegetables a day. It’s best to get your daily needs from food, but few people do that,” Miriam Pappo, director of clinical nutrition at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, said.

In 2004, research showed that more than 85 percent of women take at least on supplement on a daily basis.
