A La Vega ISD student was hit by a dump truck in Waco as she was exiting a school bus on Monday afternoon, officials said.

According to police the bus driver was letting the girl off, on Highway 84 near Shelby Lane when the girl was struck. The victim of the Waco accident was identified as 16-year-old Jocelyn Torres.

Torres was transported to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, suffering a broken pelvis as a result of the Waco school bus accident. Hospital officials said she may need surgery.

Police on the scene of the truck accident in Waco said the driver told officials he could not see the girl because of the glaring sun reflecting on the windows. The driver apparently swerved to avoid an accident with the bus and hit Torres.

Pedestrian accidents are one of the most common types of accidents where people are injured when a bus is involved. The prevalence of students and passengers boarding and exiting the bus can make special care even more important for drivers surrounding and the operator of the bus itself. The mistakes or inattention of drivers who mistakenly hit pedestrians are often overshadowed by the piling medical costs associated with surgeries, treatment and rehabilitation coinciding with auto accident injuries.
