Woman Killed in San Antonio Rear-end Collision

A multi-vehicle pile-up along Loop 410 in Southeast Side killed one woman, who’s sedan caught fire as a result of the crash early Saturday morning.
According to police, the woman had slowed with traffic as police dealt with a different accident nearby.
Although the woman slowed, the driver of a Dodge 3500 truck behind her did not reduce his speed soon enough, resulting in a rear-end accident.
The woman’s Honda Accord caught fire and witnesses on the scene could not pull her to safety soon enough. The woman died inside the car before emergency crews could get to her, witnesses said.
The woman has not yet been identified as authorities work to use DNA to discover who she is.
Rear-end collisions can often result in similar damage to both vehicles if they are relatively the same size. In contrast, a larger vehicle crashing into a smaller one will often cause extensive damage to the smaller vehicle and could result in greater injuries or death to passengers or drivers of smaller size cars.
In addition, the injuries endured by occupants in the vehicle that is rear-ended can sometimes be more severe in comparison with those in the vehicle that rear-ends another because the impact can be unexpected for the car being struck from behind. The occupants in the vehicle which strikes the car ahead can sometimes be decreased as they have time to brace for the impact.
Some of the injuries experienced by those involved in a rear-end collision can include:
- Cervical spine injury (or whiplash)
- Lumbar spine tissue injury
- Spianal cord injury
- Facial injury
- Head injury
