Woman Killed, Man Injured in Interstate-35 Truck Accident

A three car accident on Interstate-35 in Bellmead, Texas left a Hutto woman dead and a Godley man injured Tuesday night.
The 22-year-old Hutto woman, Katrina Bond, was pronounced dead on the scene after her car was rear ended by a truck, pushing her into the back of an 18-wheeler truck, officials from the Department of Public Safety said.
The truck driver who rear ended Bond, 23-year-old Brenton Leonmont of Godley was injured in the accident and treated on site.
The 18-wheeler truck driver, Delon Riley, of Round Rock, Texas, sustained no injuries in the accident, authorities said.
While investigations continue, police are preparing charges against the driver of the pickup truck, who, authorities say, was driving at high speeds when he collided with Bond’s car.
In 2009, almost 3,200 people died in truck accidents, 70 percent of whom were car passengers. While any collision with an 18-wheeler truck can be dangerous, accidents involving cars that rear end commercial trucks can be particularly fatal. Because 18-wheeler trucks sit up higher than cars, the trucks should be fitted with under-ride guards, which can often prevent catastrophic damage to passenger cars.
Tractor-trailer trucks with inadequate under-ride guards leave vehicles vulnerable to severe damage upon impact, allowing cars to slide beneath trucks, smashing windshields and crushing roofs despite slow speeds.
