A wrong-way accident in San Antonio was, reportedly, caused by a 59-year-old woman with a medical condition, police said.
The woman had recently been released from Audie Murphy VA Hospital. Officials said she is a diabetic. The woman, who has not yet been identified, was traveling on I-10 near Frio Street when her Volkswagon Bettle smashed into a pickup truck and then crashed into an SUV.
Authorities reported that the SUV’s passenger was injured in the San Antonio car accident. A baby was also a passenger in the SUV but was not injured in the collision.
Police believe that the woman could have possibly gone into a diabetic shock, causing the wrong-way collision.
Heart conditions, breathing complications, seizures, diabetes and sleep apnea are just some of the medical conditions that can affect a driver’s ability to control a vehicle, sometimes provoking serious accidents if loss of consciousness ensues. In some cases, where an accident occurs because of a loss of consciousness, drivers who were aware of the risks associated with driving may be held responsible for such risks. Prior knowledge regarding a medical condition that could cause loss of consciousness is an important aspect of proving liability and negligence that resulted in serious injury or death of other drivers, passengers and even pedestrians.
