Carlson Cares Movie Night: A Celebration Of Read Across America Under The Stars

BRYAN, TX – The Carlson Law Firm is delighted to invite the community to join us for a special evening of family-friendly entertainment at Carlson Cares Movie Night on March 2, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to celebrate Read Across America. The event will take place at the firm located at 1121 Briarcrest Dr. Suite 200, Bryan, Texas.

Carlson Cares Movie Night is a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and celebrate Read Across America by enjoying a movie based on the classic Dr. Seuss book, Cat in the Hat.

The screening is a delightful outdoor event where the hosts transform the environment into a cinema under the stars. This experience will be complete with a big screen, a popcorn stand and other classic movie treats —all free! Attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs or blankets to get cozy and fully enjoy the show.

Carlson Cares Movie Night also offers spectators a chance to capture the moment with a photo booth inspired by Dr. Seuss’s Cat in the Hat. But wait, there’s more! Giveaways and free books will give attendees the joy of taking a part of the experience home to remember.

“Student literacy is something we are very passionate about, and we realize that one of the greatest barriers to reading is access to books,” said Kathryn Knotts, partner attorney at The Carlson Law Firm’s Bryan and Baytown locations. “Our hope is that events like this will put more books into the hands of students.”

Recreational reading is immensely beneficial. A study performed by cognitive development scientists suggests that students who read for fun have a higher tendency to have more developed verbal abilities. Other benefits include improvements in concentration, reading and writing skills, and working memory. On the other hand, recreational reading can also have positive societal implications, including better communication, empathy, and the ability to understand people who are different from oneself. Many studies have also shown that the benefits of reading for pleasure follow children into adulthood. Adults who read for fun as children may have an easier transition into adult life due to the skills developed in earlier years.

Recreational reading shines the light towards a brighter outcome for children. And, while according to a Pew Research article, recreational reading among young people is currently at a low, there is hope. Communities, organizations, and educators continue to promote the benefits of reading for fun. Initiatives like Carlson Cares’ Movie Nights aim to address two key issues that affect child reading engagement: access to books and the foreignness of the reading experience. In a world moved by electronic technology, reading can seem unnatural to children who have only had exposure to reading for school assignments and not for fun. It is important that children have access to books that are entertaining to them. There are different strategies that can foster reading engagement. Often, watching a *fun* movie based on a book that aligns with the children’s interests can serve as a bridge to introduce them to the original book. This type of movie night not only encourages recreational reading but also can be a great way to spend time together as a family.

“We also realize that in today’s economy, families often do not have the extra room in the budget to go out together as a family,” added Kathryn. “This event will create the opportunity for families to connect without impacting the family budget in any way.”

Carlson Cares Movie Night aims to foster a sense of community and celebrate the joy of literacy. Come to this fun and free event for a night of entertainment, generosity, and community spirit. We look forward to sharing this memorable evening with you and your family!
