Patients who took Viberzi may be eligible for compensation by filing a Viberzi lawsuit if diagnosed with pancreatitis. Our dangerous drug lawyers are taking clients nationwide.
Viberzi manufacturer, Allergan, failed to warn doctors that the drug increases the risks of pancreatitis for patients who are missing their gallbladder. The Carlson Law Firm is accepting clients who suffered pancreatitis.
What is Viberzi?
Viberzi’s intended use is to manage irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) in adults. The drug’s active ingredient eluxadoline. It is the first and only prescription therapy available to treat abdominal pain and diarrhea that arises from IBS-D. In essence, the drug does the following:
- Reduces nerve sensitivity in the intestine.
- Slows the movement of food through the colon.
The Viberzi Lawsuit: Why is Viberzi dangerous?
The drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in May 2015. However, within the first 20 months after its approval, the FDA received reports of 120 serious cases of pancreatitis or death in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database as a result of the drug. Of the 68 patients who indicated their gallbladder status, 56 no longer had them. Of the 76 patients who were hospitalized, the two who died did not have a gallbladder.
Viberzi in Patients without a Gallbladder
At least, 10% to 15% of the world’s population suffers from some form of IBS. There is evidence that patients with IBS are more likely to undergo abdominal and pelvic surgeries. Most often, they undergo gallbladder removal surgery. As a result, millions of Americans were potentially exposed to pancreatitis caused by Viberzi.
Why do patients without a gallbladder suffer pancreatitis from Viberzi?
Patients with IBS-D suffer from debilitating discomfort with severe cramping, abdominal pain, bloating and gas after a meal. Viberzi reduces or eliminated that discomfort by reducing contractions in the large intestine.
While this works to reduce the symptoms of IBS-D, it also causes spasms in the Sphincter of Oddi—which refers to the smooth muscle that surrounds the end portion of the common bile duct and pancreatic duct. These spasms activate the digestive juices from the pancreas and enter the small intestine. This essentially causes the digestive enzymes to break down in the pancreas itself.
Why is pancreatitis dangerous?
In short, pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. An inflamed pancreas will start attacking itself with its own digestive enzymes. Eventually, this can end up destroying healthy cells and prevent the pancreas from producing necessary enzymes.
Pancreatitis is a very painful condition that can be deadly and requires medical attention as soon as possible. In addition, research shows that pancreatitis can lead to pancreatic cancer.
Symptoms of Pancreatitis
Patients who experience Viberzi pancreatitis may experience the following symptoms:
- Abdominal pain
- Swollen or tender abdomen
- Weight loss
- Fast heart rate
- Back pain
- Loss of appetite
In more severe cases, bleeding into the pancreas, tissue damage and the formation of pancreatic cysts can occur. Further, severe pancreatitis can affect a number of other organs in the body, such as the heart, lungs and kidneys. Patients are also at risk of developing diabetes if the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas suffer damage. Contact a qualified lawyer to discuss your Viberzi Lawsuit.
How did Allergan respond to its dangerous drug, Viberzi?
Almost two years after introducing the drug to the U.S. market, Allergan updated Viberzi’s label. The label now includes important risk information about the risks of pancreatitis and of the spasming of the sphincter of Oddi.
Specifically, the website says:
“Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) has happened most often in people who do not have a gallbladder and can lead to hospitalization. Pancreatitis has led to death in some people who do not have a gallbladder.”
The site also warns about those who do not have a gallbladder facing new or worsening abdominal pain in the sphincter of Oddi.
You should not take Viberzi if you suffer from any of the following:
- Do not have a gallbladder
- Have or may have had a blockage in your gallbladder or a sphincter of Oddi problem
- Have or had problems with alcohol abuse, alcohol addiction, or drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day
- Have had pancreatitis or other pancreas problems, including if you have had or may have had a blockage in your pancreas
- Have had an allergic reaction to Viberzi
- Have severe liver problems
- Have had long-lasting (chronic) or severe constipation, or problems caused by constipation
- Have or may have had a bowel blockage (intestinal obstruction)
