What is Xarelto?
Xarelto (and the generic version Rivaroxaban) is a blood thinner used to reduce the risk of blood clots and strokes. While there are many drugs on the market that are used to treat these conditions, such as Coumadin (Warfarin), Pradaxa (Dabigatran), and Eliquis (Apixaban), Xarelto is currently the most widely prescribed drug in this class. What many people might not know is that there are many concerns regarding its safety. In total, the medication is in use by more than 9 million people around the world.
Unfortunately, this drug has been known to cause severe or even fatal bleeding. While bleeding is a common complication associated with anticoagulants, it is alleged that this particular drug is more dangerous than traditional blood thinners because no antidote exists to reverse its blood-thinning effects.
If you or someone you know took the blood thinner Xarelto, and have suffered internal bleeding, brain hemorrhage, or surgical wound infection, you may be entitled to compensation.
What Does Xarelto Treat?
Xarelto is indicated to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) by preventing the formation of blood clots. It is also used as a treatment and maintenance drug for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) (a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body, usually in the lower leg or thigh), which may lead to pulmonary embolism (PE) (a sudden blockage in an artery of the lung) in patients having knee or hip replacement surgery.
Serious Side Effects Associated With Xarelto Usage
Hemorrhaging can occur instantaneously or within a few days after ingesting the medication and are often life-threatening. Specific bleeding injuries include:
Gastrointestinal bleed (GI bleed)
Drug makers Johnson & Johnson and Bayer Healthcare failed to disclose the risks of these potentially deadly side effects.
